Exercise 187

1) Viri Romani fortes erant et fortiter cum hostibus pugnaverunt. Ita Romam servaverunt. Fortuna enim viros fortes adjuvat. 

2) Multi hostes trans montes in Italiam venerunt. Eos tamen Romani vicerunt. 

3) Puer bonus est gloria matris. Omnes enim patres et matres pueros bonos semper laudant sed pueros malos non laudant. 

4) Tum, post adventum exercitus Romani, erat magna frumenti inopia in Gallia. Romani enim frumenta in agris incenderant. 

5) In Italia erant agri boni, viri nobiles, pueri boni. 

6) Imperator Romanus cum omnibus copiis in agros hostium venit. Frumenta incendit; oppida et urbes oppugnavit; viros et pueros in castra duxit. 

Reading No. 4 - De Italia et de Gallia

Italy is a land both great and good. Do you see Italy on the map? Is Italy large? Is it long? In Italy was Rome, a city both great and noble. Do you see Rome on the map? Rome is on the Tiber. Do you see the river on the map? In Italy there were many and great cities, long rivers, tall mountains. There were also fields full of grain. In the fields of Italy the Romans had waged many wars with neighboring peoples and they had finally conquered all Italy. 

Exercise 191

1) Viri nobiles et liberi civitatem Americanam servaverunt.  

Noble and free men had guarded the American state. 

2) Romani, viri fortes et liberi, Gallos miseros multis proeliis vicerunt. Romanos enim etiam fortuna adjuvit. 

The Romans, strong and free men, conquered the wretched in many battles. For also fortune has helped the Romans. 

3) Duces legiones integras in prima acie collocant. 

The leaders place the whole legions in the first battle line. 

4) Romani oppida Gallorum oppugnaverunt; agros eorum occupaverunt; frumenta incenderunt; principes, duces, matres, patres, viros, pueros, occiderunt. Ita eos vicerunt. 

The Romans had attacked the towns of the Gauls; They had seized their fields; They had burned their grains; They had slaughtered the leading men, leaders, mothers, fathers, men, boys. Thus they conquered them. 

5) Hannibal, vir fortis et nobilis, cum omnibus copiis trans montes in agros Italiae contendit. Cum eo Romani fortiter contenderunt. Urbes et oppida Italiae defenderunt. Post multa proelia et magnam caedem Romani eum superaverunt. Ita gloriam nominis Romani servaverunt. 

Hannibal, strong and noble man, with all troops has hastened across the mountains into the fields of Italy. The strong Romans had hastened with him. The cities and towns of Italy they had defended. After many wars and great slaughter the Romans had overcome them. Thus, the Romans had guarded the glory of the name of Roman. 

Reading No. 5 

Romani spem salutis et victoriae semper in virtute ponebant. The Romans were placing hope of salvation and victory always in virtue. 

In bellis omnia parabant; oppida et castra muniebant; milites et equites habebant; frumenti copiam parabant. In wars they were preparing all; they were fortifying town and camp; they were having soldier and horseman; They were preparing a supply of grain. 

Exercise 197 

1) Patres nostri, viri et liberi et fortes, multis proeliis cum hostibus contenderunt. Ita civitatem nostram et defenderunt et servaverunt. Itaque nunc civitatem et nobilem et liberam habemus. 

Our fathers, men both free and strong, in many battles with enemies have contended. Thus they have both defended and guarded our city. Therefore now we have a city both nobile and free. 

2) Vobiscum de salute militum vestrorum agemus. 

We will act with you concerning the salvation of your soldiers. 

3) Te propter caedem servorum miserorum non laudo neque virtutem tuam laudo.

I do not praise you on account of the slaughter of the wretched servants neither do I praise your virtue. 

4) In primam aciem legiones meas integras mittam. 

I will send my full legions into the first battle line. 

5) Oppida vestra et urbes vestra oppugnabimus. Frumenta incendemus. Pueros vestros et matres vestras terrebimus. Ita milites vestros vincemus. 

We will attack your towns and your cities. We will burn the grains. We will terrify your boys and your mothers. Thus we will conquer your soldiers. 

6) Bellum difficile et periculorum plenum est. Hostes trans montes veniunt. In agros vestros veniunt. Cum eis fortiter pugnabitis neque de pace cum eis agetis. Fortuna etiam vos adjuvabit. 

War is difficult and full of dangers. The enemies come into your fields. Y'all will fight strongly with them nor will y'all act concerning peace with them. Also fortune will help y'all. 

Reading Number 6 - The Second Punic War

Hannibal, strong man and noble, at that time was the commander of the Carthaginians. An enemy he had always been of the Roman people. He has desired victory and command. Therefore with the Romans he was waging war strongly. He with a great army was in Spain.
