Latin Translation - "An Examination of Professed Christians by a Roman Judge" From Henle First Year Latin

An Examination of Professed Christians by a Roman Judge

Proconsul: Esne tu Christianus?

Are you Christians?

Christian: Ego Christianus sum.

I am Christian.

Proconsul: Et tu -- esne tu Christiana?

And you -- are you Christian?

Second Christian: Christiana et ego sum. Omnes nos Christiani sumus.

I also am Christian. We are all Christians.

Proconsul: Quid? Vos omnes Christiani estis?

What? Y'all are all Christians?

First Christian: Sumus.

We are.

Proconsul: Cur vos deos Romanorum non laudatis?

Why do y'all not praise the gods of the Romans?

We do not praise the gods of the Romans because they are not true.

Proconsul: Vos moneo!

I warn y'all! If you will praise the gods of the Romans, I will give to y'all rewards --- but ...

The fear of death and of wounds will not move us. We praise The Lord of Heaven and earth, 'the King of Kings and emperor of all nations.' Christ was praying for us. The grace of Christ is in us. Therefore what will terrify us? We do not fear you.

Proconsul: Christus! Quis es Christus? Romani Christum occiderunt quod malus homo erat.

Christ! Who is Christ? The Romans killed Christ because he was a bad man.

First Christian: Christus est Filius Dei et tamen frater omnium hominum.

Christ is the Son of God and nevertheless the brother of all man.

Proconsul: Cur vos imperatorem Romanum non laudatis?

Why do y'all not praise the emperor of the Romans?

We always praise the emperor of the Romans but we do not praise the slaughter of holy men nor will we praise it. Nevertheless for the emperor we pray always and will pray. We Christians  -- as Christ was teaching us -- for all man, for kings, princes, soldiers, servants we pray.

Proconsul: Vos tamen moneo! Post mortem quid vos habebitis?

I warn y'all nevertheless! After death what will you all have?

First Christian: Tu nos non movebis. Fidem et veritatem Christi nos tenemus et semper tenebimus. Christus est salus hominum. In Christo est spes omnium gentium. Post mortem magnum praemium nobis dabit; nos cum Christo in Caelo Patrem et Filium et Spiritum Sanctum videbimus in saecula saeculorum.

You will not move us. We have the faith and truth of Christ and always we will. Christ is the salvation of man. In Christ is the hope of all the tribes. After death the great reward will be give to us; We will see the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit with Christ unto the ages of ages.

The Other Christians: Amen!

Proconsul: Ubi est Deus Christianorum? Ego Deum Christianorum non videbam neque video.

Where is the God of the Christians? I was not seeing the God of the Christians nor do I see.

In all place he is but now we do not see God. God is not a body. Nevertheless after death you will see (him), nor will he give to you a reward.

Proconsul: Mehercule! Monetisne vos me? Metus Dei Christianorum me non terret neque terrebit. Ego autem imperium habeo! Vos terrebunt militum Romanorum gladii!

By Hercules! Do y'all see me? The fear of the God of the Christians does not terrify me nor will it terrify me. I However have the emperor! The swords of the soldiers of the Romans will terrify ya'll!

The sword does not terrify us nor the empire of the world. The empire however of God terrifys us and moves us. In God is salvation.

Proconsul: Estisne omnes Christiani?

Are y'all all Christians?

Christians: Nos sumus Christiani omnes.

We are all Christians.

Proconsul: Itaque omnes hos Christianos 'gladio animad-verti placet.'

Therefore all these Christians 'be punished by the sword.'

Christians: Deo gratias! Pro te orabimus. Christus nos in Caelum vocat!

Thanks by to God! We pray for you. Christ calls us into Heaven!
